Blood Horizon (2021) is a red neon contour dictated by the diastole-systole data of my heart rate, recorded every five minutes, between 5am and 7am on September 25th, 2021 at Bongin Bongin (Mona Vale) Beach, Sydney. Responding to the changing light, warmth and increasing human activity as the sun rose, I plotted my heart rate readings on a graph, noting how sensory triggers in the landscape affect the data. The graph contour references the horizon line found in Western Landscape painting traditions, metaphorically aligning the vital rhythm of my body with the landscape. When ionised by electricity, neon gas buzzes, agitates and emits a red-coloured light alluding to blood coursing through veins: an ancient symbol of kinship.
